You are quite right! I have always argued that the Smalltalk programming environment is conceptually not much different from the Java programming environment if you contain the Java SDK and the IntelliJ IDE within a Linux system image running under VMware or VirtualBox. So criticisms about Smalltalk being “insular” are unwarranted.
