Twenty years ago, Python did not have such a strong ecosystem and large community. Things changed in the 2010s when people started to adopt Python for data science and machine learning.

Ditto for JavaScript. In the 2010s, the demand for web applications took off with the rise of Node and Angular.

There’s no reason why the same thing can’t be repeated for Smalltalk. People just have to give it a chance.
