Today's generation of programmers are too obsessed with career/job opportunities. They overlook other reasons for studying programming languages such as gaining key insights, exploring special-purpose domains, and uncovering hidden gems.
One language example that I promote is Smalltalk. Smalltalk is the ideal way to learn and understand object-oriented programming. Once you know Smalltalk, you can appreciate the shortcomings of all other OOP languages.
Smalltalk is a hidden gem, a "secret weapon" of many software developers. It is the most productive of all the major programming languages, according to a 2017 study by Capers Jones. See https://itnext.io/mmxxii-year-long-celebrations-for-smalltalk-e56bf8d6733b.
