The Decline of Computer Science Education in USA?
I found something interesting…
I was looking at the International Collegiate Programming Contest, a world-renowned competition whose history goes all the way back to the 1970s.
When you look at the history of past winners, you see a fascinating trend. From 1977 to 1989, USA was consistently the winning nation. USA won a few more times in the 1990s but after that, USA dropped off a cliff, never to be seen again.
In the last 21 years, Russia has absolutely dominated, followed by China.
This suggests to me that USA’s technological dominance has been waning for decades. That USA’s Computer Science education isn’t as strong as it used to be.
This lends further credence to this graphic:
It’s interesting that USA and Russia produce about the same number of STEM graduates, but Russian graduates are far more capable.
I think the Chinese need to focus a lot more on Computer Science. They should totally dominate the competition.
Maybe the Chinese should look at Smalltalk… 😁😛😉
