It’s funny, every time I debate someone about JavaScript (and Node), they trot out the same tired list of JS adopters (Netflix, PayPal, Walmart, Facebook, Instagram, etc.). Nobody is disputing the fact that some big name companies are using JS and Node. But to extrapolate from this and claim that “most real companies” are using JS to build enterprise-scale software is pure hyperbole. I have no doubt that Java, Python, C++, C#, Ruby, and PHP are used to write a heck of a lot more software.
