In every programming language, including the bad ones, you can always find some people who excel at using it proficiently. This includes PHP (an awful, awful language) and Perl (I don’t really know how awful it is). This doesn’t make those languages ideal to use.

Are JavaScript and PHP useful languages? Without a doubt, yes, thanks to their vibrant user communities and substantial ecosystems. But being useful does not imply smooth sailing for everyone involved. I’ve spoken to PHP veterans who dislike using this language; they tell horror stories suitable for campfire talk. Ditto for JS vets.
