I’m writing this on my main computer, a 2011 Mac mini (running OS X Yosemite) with:

  • 2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core I5
  • 8GB of 1333MHz DDR3 memory
  • AMD Radeon graphics with 256MB
  • 500GB 5400-rpm hard drive
  • 802.11n Wi-Fi (more than fast enough for 35+ Mbps d/l broadband speed)
  • USB 2.0

After 5 years, it’s still going strong and I feel no need to upgrade. My Mac mini is fast enough (and capacious enough) for general use:

  • email and web surfing
  • word processing, blogging
  • image and video editing
  • running VirtualBox VMs (Windows 7 and Linux)
  • dual boot with Windows 7 Boot Camp
  • software development in Python, Go and Smalltalk, as well as Java for Android and Objective-C for iOS
  • FTP and remote sessions

So I wonder…what the hell are people doing with their Macs that require them to upgrade so often???

(I don’t play video games on my computer.)
