For many years, we have been manipulated, stimulated to consume as maniacs. To buy everything that was launched in the market. To have the newest car, the latest iphone, the best brands, lots of clothes, lots of shoes, lots of lots, lots of everything.
Consumerism and marketing have driven global economic growth. The world economy prospers only if companies everywhere can convince us to buy their unnecessary products. Marketing is used to manipulate our psychology into believing that we must have what they’re peddling. Imagine the economic chaos if everyone started to believe in a simpler, more thrifty lifestyle. Who would buy their products? Sales would decline. Jobs would be lost. The global economy would shrink. Our lives would become more idyllic, pastoral, rustic, less stressful, more peaceful, more humane. Happier! But lacking in “progress.” This is an awful vision of the future.
