Actually, there are polls to measure popularity. There's the Edelman Trust Barometer:

China has 90% support, whereas Canada has 50%, Germany has 45%, Australia has 44%, Hong Kong has 42%, USA has 39%, UK has 36%, and France has 35%.

There’s also a study from Harvard that shows 95.5% satisfaction rate in China!
